Greetings
from the SFBS President, Sandeep Karkal

WEFTEC 2003
By the time you read this article, a major event will have passed by us. I refer of course to the WEFTEC 2003 Conference in Los Angeles (October 11-15), where I hope the San Francisco Bay Section (SFBS) and the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) will once again have been well represented both in terms of attendees and awards winners. It’s always exciting to attend this annual event, but it’s sweeter yet when your Section and State representatives come away with the awards. But I’ll save that for the next issue of the Inkspot….
SFBS Board Nominations
On another note, this is also the time of year that your Section looks to fill the position of Second Year Director on its governing Board. This position also initially serves as the secretary for the Section, and is created by the moving on and moving up of the current crop of Section officers on an annual basis. If you know of someone (including possibly, yourself) that you feel would be a good candidate for the position either this year or in the future, please contact either Leo Gonzalez or me with a name and contact information.
Committee Activities
With respect to committee activities, following upon the success of their last couple seminars, the Professional Development Committee (PDC), the Collections Systems Committee, and the Lab Committee have all decided to hold another round of seminars (and they’ll even be
on different days this time!). First up is the Lab committee with a seminar on Proficiency Testing (PT) programs on Tuesday, November 4, at the Hilton Garden Inn, in San Mateo. Next, it’s the PDC with a seminar on Corrosion Control on Thursday, November 6, at Hs Lordships in Berkeley. And finally, the Collections group is having a seminar on flow monitoring, dye flooding, and smoke testing on Wednesday, November 12, at the City of Burlingame Public Works facility.
SFBS Membership News
Some brief news items on the Section. At last count, the SFBS was over 1,000 members strong and still growing!!. While some of this growth can be attributed to a decision by CWEA last year to make local section membership mandatory, the choice of which local section to belong to is still a voluntary one. In that sense therefore, it is gratifying to know that our members are electing to stay with the SFBS, and that new members are opting to elect our Section as their section of choice. And we want you all to know that your faith in this Section is much appreciated, now and in the future.
Along with the growth in membership, the Section’s web site is also growing in popularity. Our Webmaster Bill Slenter reports that as of last month, the SFBS web site has achieved almost 10,000 hits since it was last updated! A quick tour around the web sites of other local CWEA sections indicates that the SFBS web site is by far the most frequently visited site of the CWEA local sections. Recognizing this, and also that the Internet and our web site generally enhances communication and information sharing throughout the Section membership, the Section will be considering some future web related initiatives. Some of these initiatives include direct electronic delivery of time critical items such as the Section newsletter, and seminar and event flyers, and making seminar highlights available online.
That’s all for this month. Please be sure to show up and support your local section, whether it’s at a SFBS specialty seminar, or a monthly dinner. Hope to see you there!!

Musing
from the Editor
Which is worth more, a crowd of thousands,
or your own genuine solitude?
Freedom, or power over an entire nation?
A little while alone in your room
will prove more valuable than anything else
that could ever be given you.
