Greetings
from the SFBS President, Sandeep Karkal

One more California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Annual Conference is past us, and I’m extremely happy to report that the San Francisco Bay Section (SFBS) was very well represented among the statewide award winners in Ontario, CA.
• Plant of the Year (large) – Central Contra Costa Sanitary District
• Collection System of the Year (large) –
Central Contra Costa Sanitary District
• Collection System of the Year (small) –
Castro Valley Sanitary District
• Pomeroy Award – Paul Louis (Central Contra Costa Sanitary District)
• Mechanical Technician of the Year – Prabha Karan (Oro Loma Sanitary District)
Incidentally, I was told that Central Contra Costa Sanitary District’s simultaneously bagging both “large” awards (plant and collection system) represents a first in CWEA history; no other agency has apparently managed the feat before.
Other notable events for SFBS included the induction of three of its members into the Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovelers (5-S Society) and the awarding of the golden shovels thereof, to Angelino Santos (Oro Loma Sanitary District), Steve Swanback (Carollo Engineers), and some guy named Sandeep Karkal. Two other SFBS members achieved firsts – Kathy Suter (South Bayside System Authority) was elected to the position of Vice-President Elect, (the first woman in the history of CWEA to achieve this position), which eventually leads into the position of CWEA President; and Tracy Stigers (Brown and Caldwell Consultants), who will be the first woman director to the Water Environment Federation from CWEA.
Hearty congratulations to all of the winners and newly elected CWEA officials, we’re all proud of you, and happy for you!!
Turning to other matters, SFBS has a bunch of events coming up. The Plant O&M committee has lined up a tour of San Francisco’s Oceanside Treatment Plant. The plant came online in September 1993 and at that time was one of the few plants in the United States built largely underground, and the first with a zoo on its roof!!. Recent events mean that the plant has had to implement tough security and access requirements, and it’s hard to arrange a tour. We anticipate this tour will fill up quickly. So call early to make a reservation to tour this unique facility.
Also, the Collections System committee is organizing the Annual Golf tournament and Section Picnic on July 18. The golf tournament will be at the Las Positas Golf Course in Livermore, followed by the picnic at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. This is always a great event for section members. The Golf tournament usually draws a big crowd of enthusiastic golfers, and the picnic is fun for kids of all ages!!.
And since this section is only as good as the hard-working volunteers on its various standing committees, the SFBS Board has elected to once again host its Annual Committee Appreciation function, to honor these dedicated folks who give so generously of their time and effort. The function will be held at Hs Lordships on July 10. Committee members, please contact your individual committee chairperson for more details.
That’s all for this month - please be sure to show up and support your local section at the next event, whether it’s an SFBS specialty seminar or the next monthly dinner meeting. Hope to see you there!!

Collection Committee's May Seminar
Our continuing training of staff and workforce was once again well received by over 100 persons attending our latest class on “Sewer Overflow Mitigation and Cleanup Response”.
We would like to thank our speakers; David Patzer of CA Sanitation Risk Management Authority (CSRMA), and Traci, Kevin, Tammi, and John of Restoration Management. Without their help and support, our training session would not have been such a success. Thanks again.
