Letter
from the SFBS President, Sandeep Karkal

Well, its springtime again, which means its time for yet another set of new Board members to bloom at our Section. This is my first official letter as president of the San Francisco Bay Section (SFBS) and I can tell you that I am happy and excited to be here, as I’m sure are the other members of your new Board.
As those of you attended the annual awards function in January may have heard, this section is not only one of the largest of CWEA’s Local Sections, and but also (and dare I say it), possibly its most prolific and productive section. We’re prolific both in terms of the number of volunteers that we provide to CWEA and WEF, as well as in the consistency that our volunteers display in rising to leadership positions within the CWEA and WEF organizational structures. We’re productive not only in the number of seminars, events, and programs that our section volunteers put together, but also the consistently high quality of these events in disseminating knowledge and information, and in spreading a spirit of camaraderie at belonging to such an essential but frequently downplayed industry.
It’s against this encouraging background that your new Board members take office. Already we are looking at a full and exciting year of training and continuing education opportunities. While space constraints don’t let me list every event here, an example is our Professional Development Committee (PDC), which has planned out at least four seminars: SCADA and communications systems; air quality issues and regulations for wastewater facilities; asset management; and corrosion control. Please be sure to peruse your monthly SFBS
Inkspot for more details. Or better yet, surf on over to our web site at
www.cwea.org/sfb for updated information not only on seminars and tours, but also to learn more about the SFBS, its committees, and the opportunities available to our members.
And in terms of recent events, the Section’s March dinner meeting was a notable event for local students in the wastewater field. This meeting is traditionally the Section’s Annual Student Night, and this year we had eleven firms and agencies and about 55 students from local universities participating. The event normally precedes the main section monthly dinner meeting, lasts for about three hours, and aims to bring together participating employers with potential employees in a relaxed, informal setting. A big thanks to Dolly Yu and Alex Park of Brown and Caldwell, and the SFBS Student Activities committee, for organizing the event!! A big thank-you also to all the participating firms and agencies: Brown & Caldwell; Camp Dresser & McKee; Carollo Engineers; Central Contra Costa Sanitary District; CH2M Hill; East Bay Municipal Utility District; MWH (Montgomery Watson Harza); RBF Consulting; Raines, Melton, Carella, (RMC), Inc.; SF PUC/WPC Engineering; and Stetson Engineers, Inc. – we hope that your visit was fruitful, and that we see you all again next year!!
That’s all for now - please be sure to show up and support your local section at the next monthly dinner meeting, which will also be our joint meeting with the Santa Clara Valley Section. Hope to see you there!!
