MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of the Student Activities Committee is best described through our mission statement:

"To promote student participation in activities related to wastewater treatment and water quality protection and coordinate educational and networking opportunities with professionals in the engineering and science fields."

The committee works closely with the members of local student chapters of CWEA as a liaison to the professional world by providing information on local issues of interest to students pursuing environmental careers and organizing events for students that increase their exposure to the environmental field.

UC BERKELEY STUDENT CHAPTER

The UC Berkeley Student Chapter was founded in 1996 as the first WEF Student Chapter in California. The group holds monthly meetings that typically include a speaker focusing on a technical, career-oriented, or general interest topic.

The UC Berkeley Student Chapter’s goals are to promote graduate and undergraduate interest in the engineering and science of the water environment, provide an avenue of exchange of information and ideas through networking & mentorship between students, faculty, & members of the WEF, and to promote academic excellence and leadership in environmental science and engineering.

Some examples of activities and speakers:

- September 1999 - Tour of the U.S. Coast Guard Facility in Novato. This tour focused on the dynamics of an oil spill in the Bay and how the Coast Guard has prepared to handle a large oil spill if it should occur. The group saw a slide show and received a first hand look at the equipment the Coast Guard will use in an actual emergency.

- August 1999 - Presentation by Professor Matt Kondolf from UC Berkeley on "Lessons Learned from Stream Restoration Projects". His review of some recent local stream restoration projects, as well as examples of projects from various parts of the world, provided the students an alternate perspective on a unique type of environmental project.

- April 1999 - Presentation/tour of the Los Vaqueros Reservoir.

- November 1998 - Presentation by David Green from Berkeley Labs on UV treatment of wastewater.

- October 1998 - "Behind the scenes" tour of the water treatment system at Steinhart Aquarium.

- September 1998 - Participation in the 1998 California Coastal Cleanup. Group members helped clean up the Berkeley shoreline.

- May 1998 - Tour of the Delta with a guide from the agricultural extension. The group toured the levies and the different agricultural and ecological areas, and discussed the subsidence problem. In the afternoon, the group met the Stanford WEF Chapter at the Clifton Court Forebay and toured the pumps which move water from the Delta into the California Aqueduct.

- April 1998 - Canoe trip through the Petaluma Marsh with "Save the Bay".

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIE

Alumni Career Panel

Each year, usually early in the spring semester, the UC Berkeley Student Chapter sponsors a career panel comprised of UC Berkeley alumni who have been working in the environmental field. Panelists are invited who provide a cross-section of career backgrounds - from large and small consulting firms to public and regulatory agencies. The panelists describe the different aspects of their jobs, how their work relates to the other panelists’ positions, and what parts of their Cal Berkeley experience prepared them for the working world. Students have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists regarding their specific project responsibilities, job satisfaction, and, of course, salary.

Student Career Night

This annual event is held in conjunction with the March meeting of the San Francisco Bay Section, and gives students the opportunity to discuss career options with engineering consulting firms, municipalities, and public agencies from around the Bay Area. It also allows the companies the chance to meet and recruit environmental engineering and science students from nearby universities and colleges. One or two guest speakers are selected each year to present their research on wastewater related subjects.

Spend a Day with an Engineer

With the help of corporate and public agency sponsors, students have the opportunity to spend a half-day or full day with different engineers, laboratory technicians, and/or operators from the sponsoring organizations. This event allows students to explore their career choices and opportunities.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The best way to get involved is volunteer to be part of the Student Activities Committee. There are many ways to help students learn about the work we do in the environmental field, and all it takes is a few people to provide ideas, be a professional liaison, and to help organize events that will expose students to the many opportunities available to them.

If you are not able to be part of the Committee, please me know if your organization has a new or unique project that would provide an educational opportunity for students pursuing an environmental career. Remember, exposure to many of the activities and projects that we may take for granted could be very beneficial to a group of college students who are trying to find out how their education fits into possible career paths.

If you have any ideas or would like to talk about how you can get more involved with the Student Activities Committee or the UC Berkeley Student Chapter, please feel free to contact any of the people listed below.
